A furnace filter has two main jobs:

Furnace filters satisfy the original purpose of having an air filter; a furnace filter will protect your HVAC equipment from getting dirty. While a furnace filter will keep your HVAC equipment clean which is a very important job, it will do little to improve indoor air quaility which has become a big issue with the number of indoor air pollutants present today.
