Auto Emissions

Definition:

Auto emissions are particles and gases that are introduced into the atmosphere by motor vehicles.

Facts:
  • Hydrocarbons are produced from unburned and partially unburned fuel and are the main component of smog.
  • Other pollutants present in vehicle exhaust include Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide, and Sulfur Oxide.
  • Smog and haze in highly populated areas are most concentrated during the warmest months of the year.
  • Solid particles of soot and smoke that are formed will remain suspended and can be carried by wind currents long distances before settling.
Reactions:
  • burning, itchy, watery eyes
  • sore, dry, irritated throat
  • coughing, wheezing
  • shortness of breath
Particle Size:

Most range from 1-3 microns.  Diesel particles specifically will range from 1-10 microns, but the majority of diesel emissions are below 2.5 microns.
