Legionella species are the causative agent of the human Legionnaires disease and the lesser form, Pontiac Fever. Legionella transmission is via aerosols - the inhalation of mist droplets containing the bacteria. Once inside a host, incubation may take up to 2 weeks. Common sources include:
- cooling towers
- swimming pools
- domestic hot water systems
- fountains
- similar disseminators that tap into public water supply
- freshwater ponds and creeks
Testing Process: Your test kit will be mailed to you along with everything needed for the testing process. Once you complete the test, you will return it to the lab using the postage-paid envelope provided. Your results will be emailed in PDF format in 14-21 business days after the lab receives your test.
*** Water sample is collected by drawing water directly from the test site in a sterilized screw-cap collecting bottle (100-1000 ml).
*** Collect at least 100 ml of water (500ml recommended) if testing a cooling tower and 1000ml of water if testing potable water.
*** DO NOT collect heavy sediment at the bottom of the tank and DO NOT scrape sides of the tower or collection site. The ideal sample is the clearest possible water.
*** Sample must be sent to the lab within 24-48 hours for analysis
Your Results: EDLab (Environmental Diagonostics Laboratory), accredited by the AIHA (American Industrial Hygiene Association), will provide a final report included in the cost of the test. The report will show quantitative results given in terms of Colony Forming Units (CFUs). A comprehensive laboratory report is provided upon completion.
